Top 12 tips for a successful children’s birthday party!

So you’ve got the party venue sorted but need to start on the theme for your child’s birthday party and you haven’t got a clue. Or you’re worried about the planning and preparation and what type of food to cook. Fret no more, as we have come up with 12 tips to help you plan a successful birthday party for your little one.

Make sure that there is a theme involved

Having a theme for your child’s party enables you to create focused birthday invitations, decorations, games, activities, food and party bags. Ask your child what they would like as there theme or take one of their particular interests, e.g. monsters, pirates, princesses, fairies.
For more suggestions, how about, your child’s favourite toy or doll, favourite character or television programme, sports figure or a particular sport itself, movie or film star, song or pop star, storybook or cartoon characters, super heroes. The choices are endless.

Plan your party with your little one

Let your child help with ideas for party theme, games and decorations so they can feel part of the planning of their special day too. It will also keep their mind occupied and busy for the few weeks prior to the big day. Have your little one help to make the invitations and decorate the party venue before everyone arrives. Ask them to go shopping with you to choose the treats for the party bags for everyone to take home.

Keep your party short but sweet

A well-planned birthday party begins and ends on time. Two hours either in the morning or afternoon is best so why not plan it around when your child is at his/her most active so they get the most out of the party.

Plan the birthday party guest list

If possible, try to keep the guest list to just good friends only so that you can manage and look after everybody. If you wish to have a large group of friends, ask for some of the parents to help out on the day. You will need to decide whether relatives will also be invited and how other siblings will be involved in the occasion.

Plan the decorations to suit the theme

Firstly you need to decide on your party venue. Indoors or outdoors? The weather will be your guide, but make sure that you plan and prepare for poor weather or really good weather, where the children will most likely want to be outdoors. Make sure that you have enough room for everyone to play, sit and eat. Make sure you decorate the outside and inside with balloons, have party music playing to suit your theme, party games that match the occasion, dress the birthday boy/girl in a special/new outfit so they feel important for the day.

Plan all the games and activities for the day

Be prepared for quieter games to action-packed activities throughout your child’s party. Lots of high-packed games at the beginning of the party to get their energy running and some low-paced games towards the end so they cool off and relax before their parents pick them up.

Plan all the birthday party goodies

Birthday cake and ice cream always go down a treat and shouldn’t go amiss at a child’s birthday party. It might be a good idea to provide some healthy snacks throughout the day so they don’t overload on junk food. Cheese and crackers, fruit salad, nuts, raisins, cut-up vegetables.

Prizes for both the winners and the losers

Having solid winners and losers can always create a sour feeling at a party so make sure there are prizes available for both the winners and losers so no one misses out. Play games that have group winners rather than individual winners.

Be prepared for a few surprises

Practically anything can happen at a child’s birthday party so make sure you keep that camera handy! It will be fun to play the video camera back or get the photos developed at the end of the party so your child can cherish the party forever. It may be the case that things don’t go to plan, so don’t worry and just improvise.

Be prepared for problems too

When kids or animals are involved, usually something goes wrong so don’t worry yourself if it does. Keep your sense of humor and always smile. If a child doesn’t like the food or the kids don’t enjoy the game be creative and have some alternatives aside that may please everyone. If you have other children that may be feeling left out, ask them to be involved in the planning and preparation so they feel a part of it too. Make them feel important by organising games or ask them to invite a friend so they have someone to play with.

Plan for lots of fun

It’s always fun when children are around so be fully prepared for it as there is sure to be lots of laughs, however busy the day may be. You’ll have to be prepared to be aware of your child’s mood and feelings as well as other the children’s mood throughout the day. Sometimes your little one my feel slightly overwhelmed by the attention so help them prepare for this and make sure they get an early night before the party so they don’t feel too tired for the big day.

Plan some me-time

As much as it’s there big day, it is important for you to have some free time to yourself before and after the event so you are prepared and well-rested. Have a few hours to yourself to plan some special little surprises for your little one, and have a nice long bath after the party to unwind.

Top 10 tips to choosing your wedding cake

Choosing your wedding cake can always be a difficult choice. You like fruit cake, your partner prefers sponge. You want cupcakes, they want 500 tiers…just another thing to squabble about before the big day. To give you an idea of what type of wedding cake to choose, here are our top ten tips to choosing that perfect wedding cake for your big day.

  • Take inspiration from your wedding theme and colours, wedding venue and your wedding dress. Having everything co-ordinated looks like you have gone to the ends of the earth and back to make everything perfect.
  • If you are having your cake made by a cake-making company, make sure you have your own ideas, opinions and suggestions ready for your first meeting. Your input will be greatly appreciated.
  • Make sure that you choose a cake maker that specialises in the type of cake you want. For example, if you want chocolate wedding cake, find a cake maker who has had good reviews and branded as a chocolate cake specialist.
  • When you are choosing your cake specialist, make sure that you ask to see examples of their work. You may even get some more ideas for your own cake.
  • Fruit cake is the traditional wedding cake filler, however if it doesn’t take your fancy what about carrot cake, or lemon cake and of course, everyone’s favourite, chocolate! You could even opt to have a different filling for each tier.
  • The bigger the better! Try and get a cake that’s slightly bigger than what you need so you can share it amongst people who were unable to attend the wedding and of course save some for when you get back from your honeymoon! You need to enjoy it too!
  • Make sure that you cater for any of your guests that have nut allergies. Perhaps a small cupcake or a cookie for them to take home from the wedding.
  • You could even serve your wedding cake as part of the dessert or as part of the buffet in the evening. That way it won’t go to waste and you can enjoy a slice too!
  • Get creative! Why not try tiers of fairy cakes or muffins for people to take throughout the night. Or even a pavlova tower! Your options are endless.
  • Ask how the cake will be transported to your venue and when. Fresh patisserie needs to be made the day before so it doesn’t go stale.
  • Useful websites for cake designers

Essential questions to ask your wedding venue

Careful planning is the key to a perfect wedding day. From the flowers to the reception, it’s important that you are completely organised and have everything in place in time for the big day.

One of the most important parts of the day (about from the vows) is the wedding venue. This is the place where you and your guests will spend most of the day, it’s vital you choose the right place that can cater for your wedding.

To give you a helping hand, here are some questions that you should ask venue owners before selecting your perfect wedding venue.

Do you have a marriage licence?

If you are looking to get married at the wedding reception, check that the venue has a licence to allow people to marry!

How many can your function room cater for seated and standing?

It’s all very well a function room stating that they can cater for 200 people, however what happens when you put a few tables in there? Will you all be like sardines in a tin? Ensure you ask this question so you can work out how many guests you can potentially invite to the evening reception as well.

At myfunctionroom.co.uk, all of our function rooms listed feature information about how many people their function room can hold both seated and standing, taking the hard work away from you!

Is there a deposit to pay?

Most wedding venues will require you to pay a deposit for hiring the venue, however it’s important to check the terms of this deposit. It’s also important to check where their costs come from, as it may be case they will charge you for the marquee extension or for the use of additional rooms around the venue.

Can I have an individual breakdown of the costs?

If you aren’t sure of the costs they are quoting, then ask for a breakdown so you know exactly what you are paying for making sure you know what to expect on the big day.

    Make sure that you ask:

    • If there is a charge for the room.
    • If there is a booking or admin fee.
    • Is there a service charge included.
    • Is the VAT included.
    • Is insurance included.
    • Is there a deposit to pay and is it refundable.

Are there further charges for the cost of the venue equipment?

There are wedding venues that will charge for each piece of equipment that you use so make sure you find this out before you sign on the dotted line.

    Can you provide catering?

There are many function rooms that provide catering for weddings, however some don’t. If this is the case then make sure you source a caterer first and check whether they are available for your wedding day. It may be the case that you ask your caterer to visit the party venue to see whether they have the facilities they need at the venue to serve your guests.

Do I have to use your preferred suppliers?

Some venues specify that you have to use their preferred supplies. We suggest you avoid this types of venues as you will more than likely be charged over the odds.

    Do you have a bar?

It may be a surprise to you, but some venues don’t have a bar. Or if they do it’s a public bar and not one that can be made private for a function. Ensure that you check with the venue before booking and paying your deposit.

Do we have to spend a set amount at the bar?

Some function rooms require you to put a tab behind the bar as a minimum amount that should be spent on the day. Make sure you find out before hand, so you don’t get a nasty surprise. Also make sure that if you do put a tab behind the bar, the staff members are aware of the limit.

There are many horror stories in the past whereby the tab was kept open long after the limit was up, meaning the newlyweds were left to fork out more at the end of their big day than what they had planned.

Can you supply your own alcohol?

Some venues will allow this, however you will be charged a corkage fee.

Will the venue be exclusive to us for the day?

Some venues will pack as many functions as they can over one day so make sure that you double check the venue will be exclusive to you before you set the date.

    What’s your music policy?

Some party venues have policies on when they can play music, so make sure you enquire about that first. The last thing you want is your party coming to an end at 11pm because the DJ has to go home.

Is their an outdoor area for the party to spill into?

Outdoor space makes the perfect overflow at a wedding reception so check whether there is outside space available to you and whether there is a cost to use it.

Do you have a complete list of all the local accommodation?

Your venue may be a hotel, however they may not have enough rooms. If this is the case then make sure that you obtain a list of all local venues for you to email around to all of your family and friends should they wish to book a room for your big day.

    Fantastic First Wedding Dances

We have all seen the videos and we just can’t get enough of them. Yes it’s the all singing all dancing wedding dance that are either pretty impressive or downright cringe. Whatever your opinion we have put together our favourite dances that have circulated the Internet over the past few years and brought a barrel of laughs to us all.

    I like big butts…

This wedding sees the lovely couple trick their guests into thinking it’s a usual slow starter for their first dance, when really they have other things on their mind….

    Thriller!

Zombies and weddings don’t really go hand in hand, but the way this wedding dance was performed we reckon it should become custom to every wedding!

    Jump On It

This is actually a 10th wedding anniversary but the dance is amazingly funny! :-) Check out the two cute kids at the end; definitely the stars of the show!

    Bride vs. Groom

They have only been married a few hours and the bride and groom are on opposing sides, but luckily it is all in good humour. The full-on boys vs. girls dance off is pretty impressive however we have to say, the boys are better.

No body puts baby in the corner…

    Party Theme Ideas

If you are looking for a little inspiration for your party we at myfunctionroom.co.uk have got everything you need to give your party celebration that special touch.

The idea: A celebration of the fifties!

Poodle skirts and bobby socks for the ladies, and tight cuffed jeans and white t-shirts for the boys, re-create a celebration of the 50s for your party or special occasion. Think Grease with the Pink Ladies and the bouffant hair styles. Get your DJ blasting out classic 50s tunes like Rock Around The Clock and Jail House Rock!

You could even have a rock ‘n’ roll dance competition, a hula hoop contest or a bubble blowing competition. Serve up cheeseburgers and fries and make sure you have a few Manhattans, Grasshoppers and Martinis to kick start the night!

The idea: Aloha! It’s Hawaii time!

Think grass skirts, leis, silk flowers and lots of dancing. Decorate the room with shells, palm trees and Hawaiian music playing as your guests enter the room. Traditional Hawaiian food consists of kalua pig (cooked in an underground oven) and lomi salmon, however if you can’t get your hands on that, fish, sweet potatoes, pineapples, rice etc will do just fine. Make sure you have plenty of beer and tropical drinks.

The idea: Exotic and mysterious with Arabian Nights.

Deserts, sand dunes, rich fabrics, smooth music and rich colours. An ideal party for a summer’s evening. Decorate the room like a harem with an abundance of cushions and drapes. And if you are really pulling out all the stops you could have a luxury Bedouin tent, with flame torches lighting the way towards the entrance. If their is an outdoor seating area candlelight are essential finishing touches as the sun is setting.

And for those guests who have fab bodies ask them to dress as belly dancers! Maybe avoid telling your grandma about that costume choice though! For food and drink, serve spicy meat dishes with rice, as well as a little Turkish Delight which wouldn’t go amiss.

The idea: Children’s Party (but for adults)

Go back to your youth days and recreate a little fun with a school uniform party. Decorate the room with simple and fun decorations such as helium balloons and plenty of party poppers. Games for the evening should include pin the tail on the donkey, pass the parcel and truth or dare! (Great after a few drinks have been shared!)

Serve the good old party classics like sandwiches, sausage rolls, cake and crisps. Maybe add an adult twist to your jelly and ice cream with vodka jelly!

The idea:Bring the sunshine in with a Caribbean party.

You may not be on the beach but you can certainly bring the outdoors in by hosting a Caribbean themed party. Get your guests to dress brightly and decorate the room with palm trees and bright table decorations. Have a steel band playing or plenty of Bob Marley on repeat! For party games get a limbo stick which is sure to provide endless laughs as the alcohol begins to flow!

Caribbean-style fish in coconut milk and lots of fresh fruit. BBQ food will also go down a treat!

Whatever type of party you are hosting make sure you locate the perfect venue through myfunctionroom.co.uk the online directory for party venues and function rooms in your area.

The dedicated website is the perfect platform for function room owners to promote their party venue online at a small, affordable annual cost of just £99.

    Most expensive parties ever held

Hosting your own party can be an expensive affair, especially if you want the whole shabang with the red carpet entrance, champagne and strawberries and A list celebs.

However, when it comes to celebrities and their lavish parties, cost is really no object. From the A-list Hollywood guest list to the hottest party venue and theme, celebrities stop at nothing to host the best party the world has ever seen.

To give you an idea of what these celebrities are spending, we have listed the most expensive parties ever held!

    1. $160 million celebration for Barack Obama

Possibly the biggest celebration in a time when economical conditions are at an all time low. And what makes it worse is that it was for the inauguration for Barack Obama on Jan 20th 2009 which certainly raised a few eyebrows. Great way to get their backing of your country, just spend your country’s money on a lavish party for all your A-list celebs! We’re sure that will go down a treat!

    2. $60 million for a wedding

This little princess managed to nab $60 million from her very rich father for her very exclusive and very expensive wedding day. Vanisha Mittal, daughter to steel magnate and richest man in Europe, Lakshmi Mittal, married investment banker Amit Bhatia in 2004. The wedding consisted of six day bash, 1,500 guests across some fantastic locations around France. The daddy’s girl even hired out the Tuileries Gardens in Paris for one night as well as building a makeshift castle at a park in Saint Cloud outside the capital, because clearly Louis XIV’s chateau was not good enough!

    3. $27.2 million party for Sultan of Brunei

This Sultan puts stars like 50 cent and P Diddy to shame. On July 13 1996, the Sultan held a massive party to celebrate his 50th birthday costing a huge $27.2 million.

From caviar to top notch champagne, the Sultan finished off the night with a few classics from the one and only Michael Jackson, who was paid just $16 million to perform.

    4. A $10 million Bat Mitzvah

No it wasn’t the Grammy Awards but you would’ve thought it with the line up at this extravagant celebration. 13-year-old Elizabeth Brooks was thrown a $10 million bat mitzvah party which saw Aerosmith, yes Aerosmith, flown in to perform via her father’s and con man David Brook’s company jet.

Her father is none other than David Brooks, the then CEO of DHB Insustries, the leading body armour provider to the US soldiers in Iraq who tried to use company money to fund the lavish bat mitzvah party.

And it wasn’t just bat mitzvahs the company was funding. His lavish lifestyle of prostitutes, plastic surgery and pornography for his son could see him face up to 30 years in jail. The trial is still ongoing.

    5. $7 million 60th birthday bash

Texas investor, David Bonderman, splashed the cash for his 60th birthday bash in 2009. The buyout king – a founding partner of the Texas Pacific Group, a private equity firm – booked out dozens of rooms at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel & Casino for the weekend, as well as hiring the Rolling Stones to entertain his guests.

Mick Jagger and his band mates joined up with John Mellencamp at the Hard Rock’s concert venue, the Joint, after a private dinner hosted by funnyman Robin Williams.

    6. $6 million wedding party

Russian billionaire, Andrei Melnichenko is known for his extravagant entertainment and parties. It was reported that he spent $4 million to have singer Christina Aguilera perform at his 2005 wedding to former model Aleksandra Nikolic Melnichenko in the South of France.

And in 2009 the billionnaire celebrated his wife’s birthday by spending $2 million to have Jennifer Lopez perform a 40 minute private concert for 60 guests in Britain. Just because he can!

    7. Naomi Campbell 36th $1.8 million birthday

British supermodel Naomi Campbell’s 36th birthday celebrations was truly worthy of her claim to fame. Other A-list celebs were invited to celebrate the three day event at the exclusive 18-floor Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai, which may we add, she rented. Each day had a different theme, including ‘all white,’ ‘hip hop’ and ‘Brazilian samba.’

    8. Paris Hilton’s 21st birthday party

American socialite Paris Hilton loves being the centre of attention so it came as no surprise when the reality TV star held a major party for her 21st birthday. The media reported that Paris held a series of parties across multiple locations including New York, Las Vegas, Tokyo and London, spending as much as $75,000 per guest who attended this birthday bash extravaganza.

    9. Lindsay Lohan’s 20th birthday bash

Actress and pop singer Lindsay Lohan threw a very understated but not under priced dinner party for her closest friends at a beach house in Malibu. She hired celebrity chef Kerry Simon to prepare the meal, spending a total of $100,000 for the event. (We’d of been happy with Maccie D’s!)

These celebs with their wads of cash sure know how to throw a party, however we are perfectly sure that us common people can throw a good party ourselves, and we don’t need thousands of pounds to do so.

From large hotels to small pub function rooms, we believe that everyone should have the perfect platform to promote their business and what better way to do it than with a function room directory website.

Nowadays more and more people are accessing the Internet to find goods and services. Very few people turn to the yellow pages to look for information as most of it is easily accessible online. With myfunctionroom.co.uk customers will have all the details they need about party venues listed in their area and what type of function room they need for their party.

For example if you are looking for function rooms Wigan based or function rooms St Helens based, then our search tool will allow you to find all the party venues in your local area.

Another search option would be whether you were looking for a party venue which had disabled access or catering was included. Our search bar would allow you to find party venues to suit these requirements so you are not wasting your time ringing around for party venues in your area.

For more information visit www.myfunctionroom.co.uk to find the best party venue for your special occasion.
